Bing, Bang, Boom - New York Weekend
A couple weekends ago, New York City re-upped my soul. Notable food + events, in order of appearance: Korean BBQ, halal food, meeting a friend’s baby, Brooklyn brunch, Chinatown beef jerky, an LES bar, Neapolitan pizza, tequila mezcal cocktails, and some great, surprisingly healing, drunk convos at the end of the night. Next time, a third night for more food & friends, neighborhoods, and at least one art museum.
On an uptown B train, the sounds of the subway relaxed me. My ideal white noise machine. All the sounds: The overheating sounds while idling at the platform, the chugging sounds while running on the express line. So soothing!
Another vibe: Ubers. Being in a car flying over an expressway into the night. You know you’re gonna get there, but at times it is a bit questionable. The shocks on some of those cars are BEAT!
The Sneaky Time Warp
After a week off, I got back into my writing project. It’s a whole lot of notes here. I love paper! I said it. It feels good to have it around me. On the white board, on the walls.
Going into this I knew it was going to be based off people I knew way back when, but I didn’t think about how much brain space it really meant. The male main character has to be on my mind a lot of the time, especially this early, building the character out. It’s emotionally intense in odd and surprising ways, having a person from your romantic past at the front of your mind. It’s all part of the whole process.
It’s fun to write these characters because of how they talk to each other, the specific slang words and skate terms. The skateboard itself is basically a main character. I’m at a point of introducing a couple female friends for the main female character/narrator, and they’re based off real people. As I search for stories for their crucial gossip scene, I’ll be entering another time warp. It’s gonna be a fun one because it’s the only time we’ll be roasting skaters.
There’s a lot of outlining and flashcard-ing going on, and more can still go on. I am far from being done…
As I write this, “Prototype” by Outkast came on. In this moment, this song is coming across as a woozy, nostalgic sheen where everything seems all good, but we know it was never that good. Writing about this skater days era is similar to this vibe.
I think I’m in looooooove again / I think I’m in looooooove again
Wait, wait, wait. Neva that!
