Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron

Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron is a documentary about the 7 years it took to make The Boy and the Heron (trailer).

Similar to previous docs, we hear from Suzuki, his producer, my favorite Miyazaki homie. It seems like they’re the only two old-timers left, as we witness more animator friends and mentors die.

I love the parakeets from the film and the way Miyazaki laughs when he tells us they all thought he was losing his mind when he drew them.

Derrick Gee with Jamie xx

The only reason I’m a Patreon: Derrick Gee’s radio show. Derrick had Jamie xx over for some unintentional b2b and great discussion, including the video for “Gosh,” and his creative production process. (YouTube)

The best part of being a longtime fan of someone niche like Derrick is when they have a big moment like this. You get to be part of it with them and the community at large. I watched the comment section light up with respect, admiration, and warmth! The replay value on this episode is high, as their musical tastes complement one another.

Jamie’s take on process behind creating: “when you do work it out, then you have to totally forget it, over and over again, and just try and get into a new state of mind, a new flow state, to make something new that’s exciting, or to make a bunch of mistakes that turn into something new. It’s never a straight line.”

To fangirl, by the end, I wanted Jamie to come over to MY house and play me records, and wondered if he was dating anyone? Then I realized the way to my heart is only via records tyvm. Ugh massive luv.

A little New York about it
