Old Boy 2.0
let's look at the old boy references in a certain k-pop group's latest music video
a continuous mix of shows, books, articles + more worth raving about
If you’re here for Old Boy, find it below the b2b header. First, let’s listen to some tunes to feel good.
“You Think You’re A Man” (1987) - The Vaselines
A classic cover of a song originally by Divine. Yes, as in Divine. A song for our times. You think you’re a man you are only a boy. You think you’re a man you are only a boy.
“Approaching Lifetime” - µ-Ziq
A track that feels like getting your brain massaged. Sweet relief!
“No Fakin” - 42 Dugg ft. EST Gee
When I’m in a music rut it usually means I need trap/drill in my eardrums. I love how unexpectedly hooky this track is. Mmmm, wait 'til I tell Geeski!
I haven’t been keeping up with music news, but goddamn:
The FBI just arrested Pooh Shiesty, his dad, and newcomer Big30 for robbing and kidnapping Gucci Mane and others back in Jan. (Shiesty is signed to Gucci’s 1017 label). They threatened Gucci with an AK telling him to release Shiesty from his contract. Holy shit. And, Shiesty just got out of prison.
Turnstile’s ex-drummer allegedly tried to kill Turnstile singer’s father.
The world is spinning but nothing is going well anywhere, for anyone.
back 2 back music bumps for the soul
BTS’ latest video for “2.0” references Old Boy, the ultimate, classic Korean film, directed by Park Chan Wook. The references extend beyond the acclaimed hammer fight scene. See for yourself, before we get into the screencaps:
They bring us into the penthouse apartment, complete with green-hued water (floor moats?), white furniture, and broken glass across the floor.
If you watch closely, in the background of this part of the video, you’ll notice the wall decoration is the same - a large canvas of an ocean wave and a gallery wall of family portraits. The purple gift box can be seen on the desk here:
By the end, video credits appear over a reel-to-reel tape player which Old Boy fans will immediately recognize.
The set, gritty coloring, and costuming was so carefully constructed, you can tell the team behind it has the utmost respect for Park Chan Wook, successfully creating a true homage to the film, yet still working within the confines of a BTS music video, A shocking achievement. I mean, who could’ve seen this coming?
Here is the original hallway scene from Old Boy:
