The Fall Switchover: Journaling, Korean Food, Richard Kind
+ what artist do you love the most but have supported the least?
a continuous mix of articles, shows, books, things + more worth raving about
this week: journaling is back, Korean food season, Richard Kind. Scroll to b2b to lol at guys bad at oral & say rip to rich homie quan
It’s Fall. Go write in your Gournal
I have three journals spread across my table. The one above is my classic gournal: “only three people are allowed to look at this: me, myself, and I.” (s/o Wet Hot American Summer).
I encourage journaling as a fall season activity. I picked it up again recently after months without. It’s therapeutic, even jotting down a short paragraph. Something to do instead of background-watch shows. I write to music, silence, or nighttime peepers and crickets.
It’s not about writing to re-read later. It’s about getting it outta the system.
Korean Food! / K-Drama Ramp Up
The best part of the weather changing in New England is the food switchover. We’re back bb: Noodle seaaaassssonnnnnnnnn!
Lunch: Instant kimchi ramen with a (briefly doused) soy egg.
This weekend’s meal plan involves japchae—the best mistake I made this summer was ordering 1.5 pounds of sweet potato noodles from Yami, the Asian-everything store. I changed my mind on tteokboki after liking the sauce at a K-BBQ, so that’s a new add to my cart this year.
I forgot I was watching King the Land, which means I need a new K-Drama to get me through October. I could finish Itaewon Class but…
Fall/Winter + K-Dramas = coziest combo! Wish I could get Korean fried chicken delivered, because its presence is ubiquitous, no matter the series (K-Dramas are known for mouthwatering food scenes). But the only Asian noodle dish in town is pho.
Richard Kind
One of our last national treasures is Richard Kind. Ever since his sidekick gig on Everybody’s in LA with John Mulaney (they make so much sense together), my high-appreciation for him leveled up even higher.
I started season 4 of Only Murders in the Building just for him.
A few episodes in, he’s clearly a perfect performer for this series, every line, every movement perfection. Watch him. He’s genius.
My personal favorite Kind moment will always be him singing “Christmas Tips” in Documentary Now (co-written by and featuring Mulaney).
back 2 back music bumps for the soul
Besides Anycia’s raspy, cool as fuck delivery, she’s funny. The hook in “TYPE BEAT” is about how some guy “do not eat it right. I told him get up.” I screamed. Women are gonna be okay.
Rich Homie Quan died Thursday, Sept 5, and this is how I found out:
In honor of him, here’s Young Thug’s “Lifestyle,” featuring Quan. This song sounds like it’s 10:30pm in Bushwick, and I’m about to go out (10 years ago!).
quick question: what artist do you love the most but have supported the least? i owe cash money/young money a few c’s!! 1017 records, same. plus, a whole bunch of emo bands from the limewire era. should i still pay these huge names now, though?
btw: i’m heated over the Superbowl (nfl? jay-z?) snubbing Lil Wayne for New Orleans 2025!!! not my goat! nola?! cmon!
I could not stop laughing in that Westies scene in OMITB with Eugene Levy, Steve Martin and Richard Kind. The comedic precision was just 🔥😂
