I don’t wanna be on my laptop a second longer than I have to. I’ve been working 8-hour days wondering how I used to do it. In between that, I’ve been CONSUMED by Kendrick and Drake beef. And slightly more recently, consumed by Queen of Tears on Netflix. Despite wanting a break from keyboarding, obsessing over both reminded me I belong online. I need to micro-dose hip-hop comment sections from my phone, skim for K-Drama recommendations or watch deep takes on K Dot’s latest diss by music theory majors (to those who hate on TikTok, I’ve learned a lot on there!). It feeds my interests more than real life does.
Beef
At the beginning of Drake beefing with everyone (but mainly always Kendrick) Rick Ross’ two hour response seemed quick.
Friday, May 3rd, 2024. A new hip-hop holiday. Drake dropped “Family Matters” and Kendrick dropped “Meet the Grahams” 20 minutes after. The day started with Kendrick’s “6:16 in LA,” and before the weekend was done, he was doing a victory lap with “Not Like Us.” Four tracks in 36 hours. He’s released 5 albums in his 12 year career. “Not Like Us” was one for the entire West Coast. In that moment, I wished I still lived in Oakland. My heart did the smeeze. I felt that DJ Mustard beat in my gut, and the next morning I danced.
Following Drake and Kendrick beef in real-time was like watching sports, except you never knew when they were coming back from commercial.
This could be the beginning of exposure for Drake and the OVO camp. At the helm, Baka Not Nice, already a known human trafficker (more here). Drake’s team is busy patching up what’s left of his hip-hop industry reputation, now they’re scrubbing Baka from Drake’s old Instagram posts.
Queen of Tears
Like most of Korean TV viewers and much of Netflix, I’m devouring this series. It’s got it all. Auntie Beom-ja is one of my favorite characters (check her out, below the trailer). I’ve never felt a character in my Korean blood so much ;P
I’m halfway through and whenever I get to this point I feel beyond impatient wanting to get to the end.
I’m on a K-Drama kick after I decided to finish Be Melodramatic, an underrated series with a great soundtrack. Ahn Jae-Hong is the male lead which is funny and works for the quirkiness of the show.
allergy alert: Fenty Beauty foundation
I’m allergic to Fenty Beauty’s liquid foundation. Two people posted photos of their reactions in the Sephora comment section, too. In a Sephora subreddit I learned Rihanna’s Pro Filt’r foundation has five types of dimethicone (a common moisturizing ingredient and silicone). I guess, five is overkill for my skin because it made me itchy. Too bad because it is really good coverage and felt great while on.
